Sunday Classics... 11.29.09

Right around the time of Gym Class Heroes' "As Cruel As School Children", their lead, Travis McCoy, hooked up with some unknowns. At the time, you had to wonder, who in the hell is Drake and Mickey Factz? Fast forward to now, Mickey is known and you can't get away from Drake's popularity. But the song "Overdose On Life" was the first time I took wind of these guys. And I have loved this track ever since. Please take a listen to some rappers who people like now before they became known.
Omen ft. Drake, Travis McCoy, Mickey Factz- Overdose On Life

This song was released as the first single from their fourth album, "As Daylight Dies". "My Curse", along with the rest of the album, has been generally praised by critics but has gotten criticised for going away from their style in past albums. Toning it down from their previous "harder" sound. "My Curse" is more of a mix of metal + melancholic intersections. A really good sound and unexpected if you notice that the lead isn't your typical lead singer.
Killswitch Engage- My Curse

Perhaps the oddest pairing in recent memory. But somehow, it kinda works for 30STM and Kanye. Definitely worth a listen. And Chip Tha Rip, another leaked Timbaland track, more than likely from his own camp. This one also has the potential to find lots of radio/club spins. DOWNLOAD. LISTEN. COMMENT.

Lupe Fiasco- "Enemy Of The State: A Love Story"

Easily one of the most anticipated mixtapes over the past few weeks. Lupe "goin' in" over some really recognizable beats. and the wordplay is ridiculous. For instance, take a few lines from his remix of Diddy/Dirty Money's "Angels":

"said she was a fan of mine/
knew she was New Jersey (Devils), but said that she was Anaheim (Angels)/
butterflies turn to suicides, now its phantoms flyin/
used to whisper in my ear, but now she tryna vandal mine/
that holy feeling all gone, slowly feeling all wrong/
none of this is satisfying, pull it over, let me out, ill just hitch hike back to mine/
nothings really as it seems, yea i shoulda known that/
thought i called a angel, devils had my phones tapped"

Sunday Classics... 11.22.09

For a song to come out in 1994, "Everyday Struggle" is still very relevant and relatable to me. I really don't need to add a big write up for this one. Biggie's storytelling of his life's struggles are simply lyrical magic pumping out the speakers. Still one the best songs he has ever done in my opinion. A MUST LISTEN IN MY BOOK.

Notorious B.I.G.- Everyday Struggle

A personal favorite of mine over the past two years. "After Hours" just sounds great. The strumming. The drum beats. The cymbals crashing sound well placed. A song that describes a relationship in the form of club/bar hours. Just a very well put together up-tempo indie song. Not often you get those.

We Are Scientists- After Hours

Off Jay-Z's second album, 1997's "In My Lifetime...Vol.1", "Lucky Me" could possibly be the best example of the stress, envy and utter bullshit one can go through with a little bit of success. Whether you are the platinum artist, or even the guy who won out the promotion at work. There is always someone trying to trip you up with their hatred for what they don't have. You wanna be rich and popular and successful. You live a good life. But, with stress, bullshit, conniving men and women trying to tear you down every moment to get a part of what you have, is it really the "good" life? Not so much....lucky me.

Jay-Z- Lucky Me

Fall Out Boy has always been one of the few bands I really check for when they have new music out. "Dead On Arrival" is a song that came out before the massive popularity explosion that was 2005's "From Under The Cork Tree". Dumbed down, the song is an artistic way of telling a girl who may not be totally into you, that I am a good guy if you just give it a shot. For example in the chorus, using a vinyl record as the guy:

This is side one,
Flip me over
I know I'm not your favorite record
The songs you grow to like never stick at first
So I'm writing you a chorus,
And here is your verse

Fall Out Boy- Dead On Arrival

New music from everyone's favorite British Punjabi Sikh R & B singer under Lil Wayne's Young Money label. And with DeWayne sidelined for a while, he's gonna need Kamaljit (Jay Sean) and Aubrey (Drake) to keep the label afloat. Because let's be honest, those other hacks would be lucky to headline at the local small club or open at your city's 2nd largest arena.

Also, new Lloyd,Melanie Fiona and Gucci songs.

Jay Sean- War
Jay Sean- Eternity
Lloyd ft. Lil Wayne, Juelz Santana- Pusha
Lloyd- Fly Away
Melanie Fiona- It Kills Me
Gucci Mane- Lemonade

Macklemore & Ryan Lewis- "Otherside"

MC Macklemore and producer Ryan Lewis linked up to create their debut EP entitled “VS.” in 2008. Using the idea to sample relevant, contemporary bands, the EP exposes Hip-Hop fans to genres they may be less familiar with. “VS.” re-imagines the sounds of Beirut, The Killers, Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Arcade Fire and still more. The EP should be released at the end of November.

“Otherside” mashes big drums and orchestral pieces over the Chili Peppers’ classic song about battling with heroin addiction. Macklemore now tells the story of Hip-Hop’s experience with drugs and a first story of his own battles with addiction and rehab.

Week 2 of the weekly classics series. Embrace the goods.

It's nice to see good music still come out of broken up groups. Usually, this isn't the case. But with Plus 44 or +44, it was. Come to think of it, Angels And Airwaves was pretty decent too. But as good as those were, it's even better to see Tom (Angels And Airwaves), Mark and Travis (+44) back together again as Blink-182. I'm very ready to hear some new material from them.

Plus 44- When Your Heart Stop Beating

1996. Two years after the "southern-gangsta pimp-ish" debut, Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik, came ATLiens. The album that people thought wasn't good enough. Or isn't on that same thing that the first was. Turns out, ATLiens was the "foreshadow" into the future of OutKast. The groundwork for the artistic creativity they became Aquemini, Stankonia, Speakerboxx/The Love Below and Idlewild. And now, no one questions their direction. Their style. Their rhymes. Hell, all anyone wants now is more of the goods from Big Boi and Andre 3000.

OutKast- Wheelz Of Steel
OutKast- Babylon

Not a whole lot of newness to spread around, but I do have some.

First off is a new Jamie Foxx featuring "Mr. Feature of the moment" Gucci Mane. Sooner or later this shit is gonna get old. It's not necessary to feature Gucci on everything new is it? I speakin to you Jamie, Game, Wale, Mariah, 50, Drake, Usher, Juvenile, Big Boi.... Meh, what can you do?

Also here is a new Flo Rida (I've no idea why or what for), Ludacris with Jennifer Hudson, so why not share it right?

Jamie Foxx ft. Gucci Mane- Speak French
Flo Rida- Keep It Pouring
Ludacris ft. Jennifer Hudson- Hear My Cry

In this first edition of my weekly series, I give two high quality songs.

The way I'm picking these songs is to simply NOT pick them, but let the iPod do the choosing.

Less Than Jake's 2006 song "The Rest Of My Life" has been a very relatable song for me personally. There has been many times in the past 2 years or so that it has played in my head while remember friends who may have moved away or that I simply do not see as much as I used to.

Less Than Jake- The Rest Of My Life

Off of DMX's first album, "It's Dark And Hell Is Hot", "Crime Story" sounds like a pretty good action movie. The way X spits his words and descriptions so vividly, you could close your eyes and really picture the story right in front of you.

DMX- Crime Story
